Why Wheat is Toxic

Common wheat harvest protocol in the United States is to drench the wheat fields with Roundup several days before the combine harvesters work through the fields as the practice allows for an earlier, easier and bigger harvest.  Pre-harvest application of the herbicide Roundup or other herbicides containing the deadly active ingredient glyphosate to wheat and barley as a desiccant was suggested as early as 1980.  It has since become routine over the past 15 years and is used as a drying agent 7-10 days before harvest within the conventional farming community.

According to Dr. Stephanie Seneff of MIT who has studied the issue in depth, desiccating non-organic wheat crops with glyphosate just before harvest came into vogue late in the 1990′s with the result that most of the non-organic wheat in the United States is now contaminated with it.  Seneff explains that when you expose wheat to a toxic chemical like glyphosate, it actually releases more seeds resulting in a slightly greater yield:   “It ‘goes to seed’ as it dies. At its last gasp, it releases the seed” says Dr. Seneff.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, as of 2012, 99% of durum wheat, 97% of spring wheat, and 61% of winter wheat has been treated with herbicides. This is an increase from 88% for durum wheat, 91% for spring wheat and 47% for winter wheat since 1998.

Consumers eating products made from wheat flour are undoubtedly consuming Roundup. An interesting aside, malt barley which is made into beer is not acceptable in the marketplace if it has been sprayed with pre-harvest Roundup. Lentils and peas are not accepted in the market place if sprayed with Roundup….. but wheat is ok..

Glyphosate is now the #1 herbicide used in the U.S. and is increasingly used  around the world

Developed and patented by Monsanto in the 1970’s, it inhibits an enzyme in the shikimate pathway involved in synthesis of tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine (the three aromatic amino acids). Huge expansion of GMO corn, soy, cotton, sugar beet and canola crops has led to sharp increases in glyphosate usage in the last decade. Glyphosate has been linked to the autism epidemic, gut microbes and digestive disorders, endocrine disruption, cancer, and kidney failure.  Currently, one in fifty children are diagnosed with autism; by 2025 it is predicted that one in every two will receive this diagnosis.  We are facing an epic global crisis.

Monsanto has argued that glyphosate is harmless to humans because we don’t have the shikimate pathway. However, our gut bacteria DO have this pathway. We depend upon them to supply us with essential amino acids (among many other things). Other ingredients in Roundup greatly increase glyphosate’s toxic effects. Insidious effects of glyphosate accumulate over time.

Some of the biological effects include:

  • Depletes aromatic amino acids and methionine
  • Tryptophan — serotonin — melatonin
    • Serotonin deficiency is linked to obesity, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and violent behavior
    • Melatonin controls sleep/wake cycle
    • Tyrosine — dopamine— adrenaline— and melanin
      • Dopamine deficiency leads to Parkinson’s disease
      • Melanin in skin protects from UV exposure
      • Methionine is an essential sulfur-containing amino acid
  • Disrupts gut bacteria
  • Studies with chickens, cows and pigs show overgrowth of pathogens in gut
  • Disrupts cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes which are involved in many biological functions
    • Regulation of sterols like vitamin D, cholesterol, and sex hormones
    • Bile acid production
    • Detoxifying environmental toxins
    • Stabilizing blood (hemorrhaging vs blood clots)
  • Depletes important minerals
  • Calcium, manganese, zinc, cobalt, iron
    • Likely impairs sulfate synthesis and sulfate transport

My recommendation is that you avoid all bread and wheat products, unless it is 100% organic and non-GMO.

My thanks to our friend Don Wallace for researching this.

  1. Don’t agree with your article on wheat. We dont drench our wheat with roundup and I dont know of any other farmers around us who do. Its ok to have your concerns but dont make it sound like its that common of a practice and put out a bunch of false information.

    • My article listed statistics and percentages. I did not say that all wheat is drenched in Roundup. But the percentage is high. How do people know if they are getting Roundup contaminated wheat unless they buy organic? They won’t know. What was presented in my report was right out of Monsanto’s “Preharvest Staging Guide” for using Roundup for wheat. Take a look http://roundup.ca/_uploads/documents/MON-Preharvest%20Staging%20Guide.pdf When I tied to copy parr of their guide, it would not allow that. Your farming community may not use Roundup as Monsanto suggests, but there are other wheat farming businesses that do. What is happening in major Agri-business was reported on by Dr. Seneff’s study at MIT of Roundup. Read his study. I included links for you to research more. I will say that if your wheat farming community is using Roundup in any way, it is still harming the soil and pouring glyphosate into the earth. The plants absorb that when their roots reach into the soil. It does end up in the wheat, but not as much as directly spraying on the wheat before harvest.

    • One farmer in 10 may not use an herbicide and then that farmer’s wheat will be put in holding containers with all wheat that is contaminated…and hence it too becomes contaminated. It comes down to the industry being tolerant of general practices of using toxic substances, and people not using their dollars, or voting rights to choose a better solution. Knowledge is powerful!

  2. Great information. How about oats, rice and quinoa? Should we limit these as well or only consume those that are organic? I enjoy the insight you give your followers. Thanks for your response.

  3. I would like to know if you have any information on wheat produced in Europe, where my family lives. Is the situation the same? Is wheat produced anywhere else better (besides organic wheat bread which is often difficult to find, and there are various categories of “organic” and we do not understand why some are 2 or 3 times higher in price. Thank you very much.

  4. Hi Cherie, in regards to wheat, in say flower, and as you mention breads. we want to have it clearly spelled out , that even a child can understand & not mis understand. Ok, are there any breads , that are alright to have now & then as we have always been use to some times when we would have eggs. what type of flower can my wife use , say for baking , muffins, or pancakes and any cake she may now & then bake. as far as say crackers, is there a type that are alright. and would appreciate any other advise & direction, as Jesus said in Matthew 7 : 7 that if we ask we shall recieve seek and we will find and knock and it shall be opened. Thank you for taking the time to get back with us.
    Much thanks

    • You can look for organic flour. You can also use alternative flour that does not contain gluten; that would be wheat free. Dave’s Killer bread is organic and non-GMO.

  5. Thank you…

I buy organic but if it says it’s organic and non-GMO, can we trust the product? Or does it have to have the mention 100% organic? Marthe…Ottawa, Canada

    • At this point if it says organic and non-GMO it appears that we can trust that.

  6. I live in a major wheat farming community and doubt the validity of the research you are quoting. I know of no one in this area that uses Roundup before wheat harvest. It is used afterwards to kill weeds and volunteer wheat to conserve moisture in the ground. Roundup is used on lentils and garbanzo beans to kill the plant to dry the plant for harvesting before the fall rains make harvesting impossible.

I don’t doubt that Roundup is detrimental to the soil and crop integrity or physical health. But using it as you mentioned in the wheat harvest is not accurate, at least in this major wheat growing and exporting area.

When I read things that are not accurate or have partial truth it causes me to doubt the rest of the information offered. I have to ask the question what part of this article can I believe?

I’m NOT looking for a fight or a debate, just sharing my concerns.

    Thank you for the info!

I am so glad we are becoming aware of the terrible dangers we face in the area of nutrition today.
Too bad corporations are not human beings.

    But the bible said:
“My people perished for lack of knowledge” [Hosea 4:6]

Thank you for sending info my way!

    Bless you!

  8. Wow, this was really informative. Good to know. We enjoy Dave’s Killer Breads. They are wonderful cerified organic and GMO free. They are soooo good!

  9. The statistics were Dr. Seneff’s.If you have a problem with Dr. Seneff’s statistical percentages, I suggest you contact her. Apart from the statistics, it is apparent that Roundup is used in some way on a large percentage of wheat crops in the US as well as Canada. Dr. Seneff’s research reveals that when it comes to gluten intolerance and celiac disease, the problem actually . . .is related to the use of glyphosate just before the harvesting of many of the non-organic wheat crops, in order to reduce the amount of residue that needs to be cleared and to get a head start on next year’s weeds. Most of the non-organic wheat supply is now contaminated with glyphosate. A large percentage of processed foods are made from wheat, and this helps explain the explosion of celiac disease and other gut dysfunction. But it isn’t just Dr. Seneff’s research that reveals Roundup is contributing to mounting health problem in the US. I now quote from a government site: “Celiac disease, and, more generally, gluten intolerance, is a growing problem worldwide, but especially in North America and Europe, where an estimated 5% of the population now suffers from it. Symptoms include nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, macrocytic anemia and depression. It is a multifactorial disease associated with numerous nutritional deficiencies as well as reproductive issues and increased risk to thyroid disease, kidney failure and cancer. We propose that glyphosate, the active ingredient in the herbicide, Roundup®, is the most important causal factor in this epidemic. Fish exposed to glyphosate develop digestive problems that are reminiscent of celiac disease.” http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3945755/
